“Oh, wait, I almost forgot,” she continued, her tone light as if she had just remembered something. “I forgot to mention, Anna, your girlfriend, actually left you last year after you cheated on her. My bad—how could I have forgotten such a fun little fact? It must be hard to be up here making jokes when you know everyone’s already whispering about that behind your back.”
The room went completely silent.
The best man’s face drained of color, and his smile faltered. The polite laughter from the crowd immediately turned awkward. The guests shifted uncomfortably, unsure of how to respond. Emily’s gaze didn’t leave him as she took a slow sip of her drink.
“Well,” she said, breaking the silence with a soft chuckle, “I guess we all have our skeletons, don’t we? But tonight’s about love, and I’m glad everyone could be here to witness the real love between Dan and me. It’s too bad some of us don’t know what that feels like.”
