"Sam, are you hearing that?" Elena whispered, her heart hammering against her ribs as she scrambled toward the edge of the collapse. The sound was distinct: a muffled, desperate voice crying out in an unrecognizable, frantic cadence. It was distorted by the sheer density of the glacier, but the tone carried the unmistakable panic of someone trapped in the freezing darkness.
Sam raised his high-powered binoculars and scanned the raw, blue face of the newly exposed ice wall. High up in the crevasse, buried under a translucent layer of ancient ice, he spotted a dark, unidentifiable shape resting in a hollow pocket. "There's something buried up there, Elena!" Sam shouted over the wind. "Someone’s stuck inside that wall! The ice fall must have uncovered them!"
The impossibility of anyone surviving inside a glacier was instantly overwhelmed by pure adrenaline. The muffled cries were right there, echoing off the ice, sounding like a person rapidly suffocating. Elena grabbed her satellite phone, frantically dialing the main research outpost for an emergency rescue team while Sam pulled their climbing ropes and axes from the sled.
