Within hours, Laura’s backyard looked completely different. Contractors fenced off the lawn, shut down the affected outside water line, and brought in equipment to expose the buried structure. Laura watched from inside the back door as sections of grass she had walked across every day were carefully removed. Beneath them, the soil dropped away into dark gaps around cracked concrete and old pipes.
The damage was worse than Laura had imagined. One part of the old tank had already caved inward, taking a layer of soil with it. Another section was held together by broken concrete and packed earth. Rachel showed Laura where the ground had been thinning beneath the surface. “You could have stepped through this,” she said. Laura thought about all the mornings she had crossed that spot carrying coffee.
Dark clouds gathered by late afternoon. The crew pumped out remaining waste, removed unstable material, and began filling the empty spaces with compacted stone and approved fill. Then rain started tapping against the windows. Laura checked the yard every few minutes. The workers kept going under portable lights. Rachel finally came to the door after dark. “The biggest cavity is stable,” she said. “But we’re not finished yet.”
