Start With What You Still Remember

You may remember exactly where you were standing, who your teacher was, and which classmate always made a silly face. But the photograph itself is gone. Perhaps it went missing during a move, was left behind at your parents’ house, or was damaged years ago. The good news is that yours was rarely the only copy. Digital history is quite hard to erase, and that might work in your favor here!

Before you start searching for it, write down everything you can remember. Note the full name of the school, the town, the approximate year, your teacher’s name, and the names of a few classmates you remember. Were you in Class 4B, the final year, or a specific school building? Even a small detail can help you distinguish the right photograph from hundreds of unrelated results.

So, check to see if the school changed its name, moved, merged with another school, or closed down completely. Old photographs and records may now be listed under a different institution. Once you have gathered these details, you can begin your search in earnest. And the first place you look might reveal far more than you expect…
