Cave Explorers Find a House Deep Inside a Cave — Then They Hear Something Inside

Mara stopped so suddenly that Ethan nearly walked into her. Ahead of them, beyond a bend in the limestone passage, stood a house. Not a wooden shed or a pile of fallen stones, but a small building with straight walls and a dark doorway. Her headlamp picked out blocks of pale rock stacked neatly beneath the enormous cave ceiling. She had photographed old mines and abandoned tunnels before, but she had never seen anything quite like this. “Tell me you’re seeing that,” Ethan said. Mara nodded. She was raising her camera, trying to fit the whole building into one frame.

They had been underground for hours, following an approved route through Kentucky’s Mammoth Cave. Their ranger escort was waiting around the previous bend, giving them time to work without stepping beyond the visitor path. The cottage was farther from the entrance than Mara had expected to find any kind of home. She imagined someone carrying furniture, bedding, and food through the winding passages. “Why build a house down here?” Ethan asked. Mara moved closer to the railing. She had no answer.

Then her light caught another wall beyond the first building. Mara lowered her camera. There wasn’t just one house!
