Inside, the shelter looked like a wilderness archive. Maps covered every wall. Photographs hung in rows. Plastic sleeves protected clippings, notes, and old search reports. Along one side sat packs, jackets, boots, bottles, and broken hiking equipment. Each item carried a tag with a date and location. A lantern hung from the roof, and pencils lay carefully sharpened beside a ruler and compass.
Tom approached a faded blue backpack and felt his stomach tighten. Six years earlier, he had spent nine days searching for its owner, Daniel Reeves. The pack had never been recovered. Another walking pole matched the equipment from an older case. A red child’s jacket carried a name Tom remembered from his trainee days. None of those people had been found.
Lena ordered everyone out and called the sheriff. The camp was evidence. Yet the arrangement bothered Tom. Nothing had been hidden. The tags were careful. The maps included grid references and notes about where each object had been discovered. It looked less like someone collecting trophies than someone building a record. Then Tom spotted the newest photograph near the center table. Mia smiled into the camera. Beneath it, in Oliver’s handwriting, was written: LOCATED.
