Calvin turned around, his flashlight beam cutting through the swirling snow toward the dark silhouette of the barn. He waited on the porch, holding his breath, but the heavy sound didn't repeat. Wiping cold sweat from his brow despite the bitter chill, Calvin stepped inside the kitchen, pulled out his phone, and called the former landowner—an elderly local who had handled the sale through an estate lawyer.
"Oh, don't mind that old barn just yet, son," the old man chuckled through the crackling speaker. "It’s been sitting abandoned for years. We haven't even run pesticides or cleared out whatever pests might be hibernating in there. The renovation crew won't get out there to treat and work on it until the snow thaws out a bit more in spring. Just keep the doors latched and stay clear of it for now."
Calvin looked through the frost-rimmed kitchen window at the dark barn. Relieved by the practical explanation, he agreed and hung up, completely unaware of what was already nesting inside.
