Homeowner Thought He Found a Wasp’s Nest, But What Was Really Lurking In The Barn Was Much Worse

The lead officer let out a long breath, a broad smile breaking across his face. "Well, I’ll be damned. Mystery solved." He knelt down, carefully reaching inside the hollowed-out husk with thick leather gloves to lift the shivering, squeaking cub into a padded transport crate.

Twenty minutes later, Calvin sat on the bumper of the truck, wrapping his hands around a steaming thermos of hot coffee handed to him by the response team. The mother bear had been safely loaded into a reinforced trailer behind the truck, her cub resting comfortably beside her.

"Here's what happened," the lead officer explained, leaning against the vehicle. "Late-season pregnant bears get desperate when sudden blizzards hit. She found that rotted back wall, smashed through, and found that ancient wasp nest on the floor. She hollowed it out because paper pulp and fiberglass insulation make an incredible thermal insulator for newborn cubs."
