Vivian demanded to know how Rusk knew. Calder refused to explain and ordered her to remain at the station. Instead, she called regional officials and then left before dawn with Jonah and two rangers she trusted. “If Calder tries to stop us?” one ranger asked. Vivian replied, “Then he can explain himself to regional command.”
Vale's directions led them into a narrow ravine. For nearly an hour, they found nothing. “Maybe it's gone,” Vivian said. Jonah shook his head. “Give me five more minutes.” Soon he knelt beside a moss-covered rock shelf. “Here.” Vivian helped clear it. A cross appeared, followed by numbers and letters cut deeply into the stone. Jonah checked Vale's notes. “It's the marker.”
A mechanical rumble rolled through the ravine. Vivian looked upward. “Please tell me that's not what I think it is.” A bulldozer appeared on the access road above them. It stopped near the ridge. Calvin Rusk stepped forward and looked down. “You've had your warning, Ranger Ellis,” he called. “Now get off my land.”
