Vivian and Jonah reached Miller's Crossing shortly after sunrise. Collapsed stone walls and an old well were almost hidden beneath the trees. After nearly an hour, Vivian called out, “Jonah, over here.” Beneath the moss on a waist-high stone were several straight cuts.
Jonah cleaned the surface carefully. “Survey symbol.” More marks appeared. “And these numbers match Vale's notes.” Vivian stared at the stone. “Then his map wasn't just something he drew on paper.” Jonah nodded. “This marker puts the boundary exactly where Vale said it was.” Before either could say more, an engine roared beyond the trees.
Vivian climbed the slope and spotted a North Ridge excavator nearby. “That machine shouldn't be here.” She ran toward it and waved. “Stop! This section is closed!” The operator paused. Then the excavator slowly turned toward the creek. Jonah came up behind her. “Vivian, he's heading straight for us.” The tracks began rolling toward the survey stone. Vivian watched the machine approach. “He knows exactly where the marker is.”
