In A Minus-15 Blizzard, A 72-Year-Old Woman’s Dog Kept Growling At The Window. When She Looked Past The Glass, Her Blood Ran Cold…

Heart pounding, Evelyn reached for her landline and dialed Marcus, a local county deputy and longtime family friend. Within twenty minutes, the glare of his 4x4 cruiser’s headlights cut through the blizzard in her driveway. Marcus stepped inside, stamping heavy snow off his boots. He took a flashlight and walked the perimeter of her yard, but returned shaking his head with a gentle, sympathetic expression.

"The wind is gusting at forty knots out there, Evie," Marcus said softly, pouring himself a mug of coffee. "Any real footprints would be buried in seconds, but I didn't see anything. Are you sure you didn't just see blowing branches? Isolation and cold weather can play tricks on the mind."

Evelyn felt a flash of defensive frustration. "Duke saw it too, Marcus. He knows the difference between a pine tree and a person." Marcus offered a weary smile, placing a comforting hand on her shoulder. "Get some rest, Evie. I'll patrol the ridge road."
