The next morning, the big excavation began. Laura stood at the edge of her driveway, watching a heavy crane position itself near the tree to avoid damaging her house. With a deep crunch of metal against soil, the crane pulled the buried object out of the ground.
Laura gasped. The tank was massive—far larger than the small patch Daniel had uncovered. It was completely covered in dark rust, with black sludge dripping from its rusted bottom into a containment tray.
"The leaking oil was choking the soil," Dr. Ward explained, coming over to stand beside Laura. "The tree’s roots grew right around the tank. As the oil leaked out, it killed the grass and poisoned the tree." "Will the tree survive?" Laura asked softly, looking at the big empty hole in her lawn. "We got the poison out in time," Dr. Ward said gently. "Now we just have to give it time to heal."
