Laura froze on the path, terror knotting in her stomach. "What is it? What did you find?" "Stay back on the gravel!" Daniel demanded, his voice full of urgency. Beside him, Dr. Ward was already moving away from the hole, pulling her phone from her coat pocket to dial a number with trembling fingers.
From her spot on the path, Laura strained her eyes to see into the hole. Beneath a thick tangle of tree roots lay a smooth, heavy metal surface. Dirt covered most of it, but where Daniel had scraped his tool, a patch of bright rust showed through. Right next to the curve sat a heavy iron fitting attached to a thick pipe.
"We need an environmental safety crew out here right away," Dr. Ward said urgently into her phone. Laura's mind raced. That pipe didn't belong to the tree, and it was buried right next to her home.
