The bear took a heavy, staggering step toward the stern, letting out a deep, guttural growl that vibrated through the floorboards. Its front legs were still shaky from the lingering drugs, but raw adrenaline was fast replacing the sedative. It lowered its head, baring long yellow teeth as it closed the short distance between them.
Eli held up his small bait knife, knowing it was useless against four hundred pounds of muscle and thick hide. The bear took another step, its razor-sharp claws clicking against the fiberglass deck. It raised a heavy paw, preparing to strike.
Eli didn't hesitate. He turned and plunged backward over the stern rail, diving straight into the cold bay water. He hit the surface with a loud splash, going under before kicking back up for air. As he wiped salt from his eyes, he heard a heavy CRASH behind him. The bear had leaped into the water right after him.
