Plunging the broad blade of the oar deep into the water over the starboard side, Eli braced his legs against the deck wall, using his body weight to create a makeshift rudder. The resistance was brutal. The drag forced the boat to lean heavily to the right, slightly altering its course.

"Come on!" Eli gasped, his shoulder muscles aching under the pressure. The speed of the boat created immense drag against the flat wood. The oar bent violently under the strain, vibrating in Eli’s hands.
