The captain walked over to Eli, handing him a warm bottle of water. "That dart we hit him with on land barely grazed his flank. It broke through a wooden fence and lost most of its fluid. A bear that size needs a full double dose to stay down."
Eli looked over at the massive black bear lying peacefully on the deck. Its broad chest was rising and falling in a deep, steady rhythm, completely out of harm's way. An hour later, the patrol boat docked at the edge of the reserve. The team loaded the sleeping giant onto a transport trailer to be released deep inside Ocala National Forest.
As Eli watched the trailer pull away into the pine woods under the rising moon, a deep sense of relief washed over him. He had lost an oar and ruined his boat's wiring, but out on the open bay, he had saved a life that everyone else thought was lost.
