Mara roared once, furious and frightened, slamming her weight against the side. A few people cried out behind the barricade, but Elias did not look at them. “It almost did,” he said. The ride back to the zoo was quiet. By noon, the video had spread everywhere. Some people called Mara a monster. Others called her adorable. Both made Elias uneasy. She was neither. She was a bear who had been scared by a storm, failed by a damaged gate, and nearly trapped by human excitement.
