To ensure the bear would not wander back toward the village waste dumps, they loaded her sedated body onto a stretcher. Nastya and a few other villagers flew along with the rescue team in the helicopter, watching the dark, frozen landscape pass far below them. The flight carried them far beyond the settlement boundaries, deep into the uninhabited wilderness of the north.
They flew tens of miles out into the pristine wilderness, far away from any human houses or trash piles. The pilot landed the heavy aircraft gently on a wide, untouched snowfield near the edge of the open sea ice. The crisp Arctic air blew fresh snow across the landing site as the engine RPM slowly died down.
The team carefully carried the sleeping bear out of the bay and laid her gently on a soft bed of snow. Nastya placed several heavy bags filled with fresh arctic char right beside the bear's nose. "She will need easy food the moment she wakes up," Nastya said, before boarding the aircraft to leave the animal in peace.
