Whiteout conditions blanketed the remote Arctic port of Dikson, wrapping the isolated wooden homes in a dense fog of ice. Nastya stood near her frost-covered window, her fingertips nervously tracing the cold glass as she peered out into the swirling white storm. The Arctic winds howled against the side of her small house, rattling the thin wooden shutters.
A massive shadow suddenly detached itself from the storm, moving steadily past the edge of her snow-draped wooden fence. Her heart hammered against her ribs as she snatched her rifle off the rack, instantly recognizing the thick yellowed fur and powerful profile of a full-grown polar bear. In Dikson, a bear near your doorstep usually meant one thing: immediate, deadly danger.
"Stay away from my door," Nastya whispered, taking a sharp breath as she rested the heavy rifle barrel on the windowsill. The beast walked steadfastly forward, keeping her door in sight. It trod heavily, lifting its snout toward her glass pane with a wet, guttural growl. Nastya clutched her rifle hard. She could see her knuckles had turned deathly white.
