Grandpa Finds Kittens in His Barn – Then the Vet Looks Up at the Hayloft and Turns Pale

Out in the yard, Rusty started to growl. The old retriever stood at the open barn doors with his hackles up, staring into the dim interior. He didn't bark. He didn't come in either, and Rusty came into the barn every single day of his life.

"Easy, boy," Walt called. "They're only kittens." Gravel crunched as a truck pulled into the yard. Dr. Daniel Okafor, the vet from Millbrook, had come to look at a heifer with a sore foot. Walt waved him over. "Doc! Come see what Lily found."

The vet walked in smiling, his black bag in one hand, and crouched down beside them. He reached for the kitten in Walt's hands. Then his hand stopped in mid-air. He looked at the ear tufts. At the stubby tail. At the paws. The smile left his face so quickly it was like watching a light go out. "Walt," he said very quietly. "Put it down. Slowly."
