Arthur was not the kind of man who made wild choices. He was a retired accountant, and for most of his life, he had liked quiet days, tidy rooms, and numbers that always added up. But that morning, rain had beaten against his windows, and the silence in his apartment had felt heavier than usual.
So he had put on his old brown coat and taken the bus across town to the municipal transit auction. The place was loud, crowded, and full of strange items that had been left behind in airports, trains, and buses. There were phones, bags, watches, headphones, and boxes nobody had opened yet.
Arthur had only gone there to watch. At least, that was what he told himself. But then the auctioneer pointed to Lot 42, a battered leather suitcase covered in faded travel stickers from Cairo, Paris, Vienna, and Rome. For reasons Arthur could not explain, he suddenly wanted it.
