4.Restless sleep
The fourth sign shows up in the middle of the night: restless sleep. If your partner is constantly turning over and you keep waking up because of it, your mattress may not be offering enough stability anymore. Sleep Foundation guidance also says one sign of an aging mattress is that it negatively affects your sleep quality, which can include feeling every movement more than you used to.
A good mattress should help both sleepers stay comfortable without every shift becoming a shared event. If one person moves and the other wakes up, that can be a clue that the materials are wearing down, the surface has become uneven, or the mattress no longer isolates movement well. You may notice yourself sleeping lightly, waking several times, or feeling like you never fully settle into deep sleep. Sometimes people assume stress is the cause, when the real issue is that the mattress has become too reactive or too unstable. Try to be honest about the pattern. Are you sleeping badly only in your own bed? Do you sleep better in hotels, guest rooms, or even on the sofa for a night? That comparison can be surprisingly revealing. When a mattress starts interrupting your sleep instead of protecting it, replacing it is the only way.
