5. Start Looking for People, Not Just Cars
A lot of drivers are decent at spotting other vehicles. But they are much worse at noticing pedestrians, cyclists, scooters, or motorcycles — especially when turning, backing up, or pulling out quickly. That is where a lot of avoidable mistakes happen.
Drivers who have spent enough time on the road tend to get more cautious in places where people are easy to miss: parking lots, driveways, side streets, neighborhood roads, and intersections. NHTSA advises drivers to be especially careful around crosswalks, driveways, and while backing up, because those are the moments when people on foot are easiest to overlook.
One of the best upgrades you can make as a driver is to stop scanning only for cars. Start scanning for movement. That one habit changes a lot.
