The Alchemist’s Kitchen
The heart of the home resides in what used to be the 8th-grade science laboratory. Elena chose this room for its expansive floor-to-ceiling windows and the original slate countertops that were remarkably well-preserved. Instead of ripping out the lab benches, she refinished them into a massive central island where she now preps organic meals instead of dissecting specimens. The gas lines that once fed Bunsen burners have been diverted to a professional-grade range, blending industrial utility with modern culinary luxury in a way that feels entirely organic.
The aesthetic is “Clinical Chic.” Open shelving made from reclaimed gym bleachers holds a collection of spice jars housed in vintage apothecary bottles. In a playful nod to the room’s history, the original periodic table remains painted on one wall, now partially obscured by a hanging herb garden that thrives in the direct sunlight. The old emergency eyewash station has even been converted into a unique pot filler over the stove. It is a space that celebrates the chemistry of cooking, where the cold, hard surfaces of the past are softened by the aroma of fresh rosemary and the warmth of a morning espresso.
