2. Clean Up Your Sight Lines

Some clutter bothers you more than other clutter because of where it sits. A messy drawer can stay out of mind when it is closed. A tangle of charging cables under the television is different. You may notice it every time you look across the room. The same goes for bags beside a doorway, shoes in a hallway, or objects sitting in the view from your favorite chair.

Start by checking your main sight lines. Sit where you normally relax and look straight ahead. Stand in the doorway and notice what catches your eye first. Then look from the kitchen toward the living room. Look for visual interruptions: cords, stacked boxes, cleaning supplies, random objects, or furniture edges that make the space feel busier than necessary.

You do not need to hide everything. Just remove distractions that repeatedly land in your field of view. Bundle cables together and guide them behind furniture. Move the vacuum from the hallway to a cupboard. Shift a pile of magazines from the coffee table to a lower shelf. A room can contain the same possessions and still feel calmer because the busiest items are no longer sitting in your strongest visual lines of sight.
