This 74-Year-Old Man Lives in His Old Garage — But Wait Until You See Inside!

A plain old garage

From the street, it is the kind of garage nobody looks at twice. It stands at the back of an ordinary yard in a quiet American town: white paint flaking off the boards, a little moss on the roof, and an old up-and-over door with a rusty stripe along the bottom. Most people who walk past think it is full of lawnmowers, paint cans, and boxes that have not been opened in years.

They are wrong. This is where 74-year-old Walter lives. Walter is a retired mechanic. He and his wife Joan raised three children in the big four-bedroom house in front of the garage. When Joan died three years ago, the house suddenly felt far too big. "I was heating rooms nobody slept in," he says. "I was cleaning stairs I did not need to climb." So he sold the family house to his son Mike, Mike's wife, and their two young children. He kept one thing for himself: the old garage at the back of the yard.

His friends thought he was joking. One of them asked if he was going to sleep next to the lawnmower. Walter just smiled. He spent almost a year working on it, with help from his son and a few local tradesmen. From the outside, he changed almost nothing. The paint still peels, and the old door still squeaks. "I like that people walk right past it," he says. But wait until he lifts that old door. On the next page, you will see what is behind it.
