Turning It Into a Bedroom
The nook was not perfect when Benita moved in. It had previously held a bunk-style bed, and the finishes did not make the narrow space feel restful. She stripped the idea back. The old setup was replaced with a proper bed that fit the width of the alcove. Rather than pretending the nook was larger, Benita decided to make its small size feel deliberate.

Color did much of the work. She painted the walls and ceiling in a muted earth tone, giving the sleeping area its own identity. The door became a deep chocolate brown. White linen curtains soften the edges and hide storage, while simple bedding keeps the space calm. The result feels closer to a built-in sleeping cabin than a forgotten cupboard.

The apartment’s height helps too. With ceilings of 3.3 meters, the nook has more air above the bed than its footprint suggests. Benita says she does not find it claustrophobic. She also does not expect it to work like a conventional bedroom. There is no need for a chair, dresser or wide walking area. Her test is simpler: can she sleep comfortably, get up easily and keep the space pleasant? For her, the answer is yes.
