The Secret Is Hidden Inside the Pipe
Installing the lights changed the project completely, but there was still one problem to solve. If you simply put bright LEDs inside an open plastic tube, the result wouldn't necessarily have the soft appearance of a finished decorative lamp. The light needed something to diffuse it. That's where a surprisingly simple material came into the project: drawer or tray liner.
Instead of using plexiglass, which would have been difficult to shape tightly around the curved pipe, the flexible liner could be wrapped around the outside. The liner was cut to the appropriate width, and hot glue was applied along the sides of the pipe. The material was then carefully pulled around the cylinder and secured section by section. Working around the entire pipe created a translucent outer layer.
This simple addition served an important visual purpose. Rather than leaving the LEDs completely exposed, the liner softened the appearance of the light and helped turn the pipe into something resembling an actual lamp. From the outside, the finished cylinder looked sleek and simple. But once it was connected to the lights, the real reason for all those construction steps became obvious.
