A Little Wood Makes a Big Difference
With the four wooden legs positioned around the pipe, the base could finally be secured. Brad nails were used to bring the boards together, while screws were added to reinforce the structure and make it sturdy. The wooden frame wasn't just functional. It also gave the project the decorative character that the plain pipe was missing.
Once the base was assembled, another piece of 1-by-2 lumber was attached along the length of the structure. Additional shorter pieces were added higher up, creating more support around the pipe and giving the finished light a more substantial shape. Then came one of the smaller details that helped complete the design: a wooden round was cut from a scrap piece of board and placed on top as a cap.
At this stage, the project looked more like a piece of furniture than a plumbing supply. That's one of the fun parts of projects like this. The individual materials don't look particularly impressive on their own. A plastic pipe, a few boards and some screws aren't exactly exciting. But once they're combined with the right proportions and details, the whole thing starts to look intentional.
