The realization didn’t happen immediately. In fact, they almost ignored it completely. By that point, the bathroom itself had become the focus. Every cleaning session centered around the obvious places—the toilet, the tiles, the sink, even the drains. If something smelled bad, surely it had to be coming from one of them. But eventually, they noticed something strange. The smell seemed stronger in one specific part of the room. Not everywhere. Just… near the toilet.
At first, it didn’t make sense. The floor had already been scrubbed. The walls were clean. Even the areas behind the toilet had been checked more than once. Nothing looked dirty. And yet, every time they stepped into the bathroom, that same faint smell seemed to settle in the exact same spot. That’s when the cleaning changed. Instead of focusing on the obvious places, they started paying attention to the things that usually get ignored. The smaller details. The objects that stay in the bathroom permanently without anyone really thinking about them anymore.
And almost immediately, one thing started standing out more than everything else. Not because it looked dirty. But because it had never really been cleaned at all.
