Using Aspirin to Help Brighten White Laundry

Keeping white clothes looking their best can be a challenge, even with advanced laundry detergents and modern washing machines. Over time, whites can lose their brilliance. Interestingly, a common household item like aspirin, which many people have in their medicine cabinet, is sometimes suggested as a laundry aid.

This household item may help with dingy whites.

Addressing Dullness in White Fabrics

Even when using detergents marketed to keep whites exceptionally bright, it is common to see greyish tones or yellowing develop, particularly in areas like armpits. With repeated washing, white garments can sometimes appear duller. What can be done to address this? One suggestion involves an item many people already have. To try this method for brightening whites, you will need about five aspirin tablets of 325 milligrams each.

The Aspirin Method

First, dissolve the aspirin tablets in a large bowl or tub filled with hot water. Stir the water until the tablets are completely dissolved. To help them dissolve more quickly, you can crush the tablets before adding them to the water. Next, place the dull white clothes into the bowl or tub with the aspirin solution. Allow them to soak for approximately eight hours. While you can also add a few aspirin tablets directly to the washing machine, the soaking method is often reported to be more effective for this purpose. After the soaking period, wash the clothes in your washing machine as you normally would.

Now that we have explored a tip for white clothes, let us consider how to care for dark and colored garments. On the next page, we will discuss a household suggestion using black pepper that aims to help these items maintain their appearance.
