5 things you should never use fabric softener for

3. Baby clothes

Babies have extremely sensitive skin which is likely to get irritated when it comes into contact with fabric softener on their clothes. Plus, a lot of baby clothes are flame-resistant and fabric softener could reduce the effectiveness of the material. It’s much better to use a bit of vinegar instead.

4. Applying directly

Never pour fabric softener directly onto your clothes. It’s not a cleaning agent or a stain remover but something that is supposed to be used in your actual load of laundry. That’s why it could leave greasy, waxy stains on your clothes if you were to apply it directly and these stains are difficult to remove again. That’s also why you shouldn’t use softener in a machine that’s very full because the liquid won’t be able to properly spread through the entire load.

5. The environment

Want to be more environmentally friendly? Stop using fabric softener altogether. It contains a lot of chemicals that are harmful to people, animals and the environment in general. Instead, you could use a bit of white vinegar or a detergent that’s biodegradable.
