11 Things Japanese Women Get Rid Off After 50 — That Americans Never Throw Away

#1 Remove Clothes for a Life You No Longer Live

Open your wardrobe and you may find several different versions of yourself hanging there. There are clothes from an old job, outfits bought for events that rarely happen anymore, items that no longer fit comfortably and pieces you keep because you paid good money for them. They can survive years of wardrobe clear-outs simply because there is nothing technically wrong with them.

Try judging clothes by your life now rather than by their condition alone. Ask yourself whether you would happily put the item on this week. Does it fit? Is it comfortable? Does it suit the places you actually go? If the answer keeps being no, there is little benefit in making room for it year after year. Good clothing can be donated rather than left untouched at the back of a cupboard.

You do not need a tiny wardrobe. You need one that works. Keep enough clothing for your normal routines, special occasions and the changing seasons. What you can remove are the clothes belonging to plans, jobs and habits that have already passed. Getting dressed becomes much easier when almost everything in front of you is something you would actually wear.
