11 Things Japanese Women Get Rid Off After 50 — That Americans Never Throw Away

#9 Edit the Decorations You No Longer See

Decorative objects are easy to accumulate because they rarely wear out. A figurine can sit on a shelf for 30 years and still look much the same. Add holiday souvenirs, framed pictures, ornaments, candles and family hand-me-downs, and eventually there may be something displayed on almost every available surface.

Here is an interesting test: look around your room and name the decorations without turning your head. The pieces you remember are often the ones that still mean something to you. Others may have become so familiar that you barely notice them. If an object is no longer enjoyed, useful or meaningful, there is no rule saying it has to stay because it has always been there.

This does not mean stripping your home of personality. Quite the opposite. When fewer objects compete for attention, the things you genuinely enjoy become easier to see. Choose your favorites and give them a little space. You can also rotate seasonal or sentimental pieces instead of displaying everything at once. A home can still be warm, personal and full of memories without every shelf carrying a complete record of the past several decades.
